DX Fanzine No. 57 – May 2018

DX Fanzine, an electronic newsletter which was originally edited in 1999/2000, brings together tips and news as contributed by individual DXers or ascertained from different sources. We are interested in any change in frequencies, times, language-services, transmitters, programme contents, phone and fax-numbers, electronic and postal address, station personnel.
The purpose of DX Fanzine, which doesn’t pretend to be in competition with any other electronic DX newsletter, is to provide timely and topical news and information to shortwave enthusiasts worldwide.
It is available on the web at http://www.dxfanzine.com and updated as soon as loggings, DX news, frequency updates, as well as, QSL notes are received from any SWL around the world.
Although the primary platform for delivery of DX FANZINE information remains its web site, it is turned into a pdf file, (where you can see the final version of it with loggings and information, just as they appear online), a couple of days after the end of each month and sent out FREE to anyone who has subscribed. The current as well as the previous editions of DX Fanzine (including those of years 1999/2000!) can be accessed from its home page and are there almost indefinitely.

NB: All times, days and dates are day/month GMT-UTC, unless otherwise stated.

Logs are entered in frequency order. Reception quality abbreviations: P = Poor, F = Fair, G = Good, E = Excellent.

Language Abbreviations: AA=Arabic, CC=Chinese, CT=Catalan, DD=Dutch, EE=English, FF=French, GG=German, HA=Hausa, IT=Italian, JJ=Japanese, KK= Korean, PP=Portoguese, RM=Romanian, RR=Russian, SS=Spanish, VV=Vernacular.

Material from DX Fanzine may be redistributed, posted to any other location, published or used for broadcast, provided it be fully credited to DX Fanzine and the original and intermediate sources.

VOA, via Doraleh, 1431 kHz, via Tinang 5840 kHz, via Pinheira, 4960 kHz: P/D QSL card in 63 days since I e-mailed the last of three different reception reports with the following dates, times UTC, frequencies and transmission sites: 10 January 2018, 1446-1457 UTC on 5840 kHz (Tinang), 10 March 2018, 1617-1629 UTC on 1431 kHz (Djibouti), 14 March 2018, 2040-2100 UTC on 4960 kHz (Pinheira S.Tome & Principe). Only frequencies agree with my reports. As usual, instead of the exact date of reception, VOA indicates the full seasonal schedule period. Even times don’t correspond with my receptions reports. VOA indicates the starting/ending time of each transmission but I always reported reception only about a portion of their broadcasts. For example, I received VOA in Somali language, on 1431 kHz, from 1617 to 1629 UTC but the QSL includes 1600-1630 UTC which is exactly the time scheduled for their broadcast in Somali on 1431 kHz. The same can be said for the remaining two reception reports. Last but not least: the transmission site is missing! The three reports were sent, of course in three different days, to: lettersuser@voanews.com, askvoa@voanews.com, mgsanabr@voanews.com, voanews@voanews.com, letters@voa.gov NB: The envelope was posted in Italy. Free Radio AM is – according to an announcement in their website – under attack. After Radio Oberfranken and others, a new fake station, probably broadcasting from Italy, has been heard on 1584 kHz, this time identifying itself as Free Radio AM. That is a sort of ”Black clandestine station” that claims to be Free Radio AM, the legal radio station with this name, which has a license and operates from Trieste on 1584 kHz The true Free Radio AM can be identified by matching your audio on 1584 kHz with their stream which can be found at http://www.assamgroup.it/ This Internet site also includes an announcement in Italian saying that the station «is under attack by some illegal radio operators that, especially, in night hours, use to broadcast on 1584 kHz different kind of contents with the aim of deliberately causing interference to Free Radio AM. A number of different station names have been used for such transmissions which are aired via transmitter with enough power. The situation has now become serious like never before. In the last days, those illegal broadcasters have carried station announcements saying that you are tuned to Free Radio AM. They record and falsify our jingles and voices, which are modified with the addition of insults and blasphemies. Those illegal broadcasters not only deliberately interfere to Free Radio AM but also other radio stations in Europe, whose operators can believe that the origin of such interferences is the true Free Radio AM. It’s quite evident that a criminal act is underway with the aim of forcing our station to stop broadcasting. Of all those facts, the Italian authorities are well aware since January 2018 but until now no action has been apparently made. We dissociate ourselves from any broadcast with offensive and blasphemous language and hope that authorities will solve this case as soon as possible. We invite our listeners to report to us any kind of taboo language which can be heard over that station claiming to be Free Radio AM!» (Antonello Napolitano, Taranto, ITALY).

Older ham radio operators and radio listeners might remember a time when shortwave radio stations broadcast a nearly constant drumbeat of political propaganda during the Cold War years. Shortwave radio stations such as Radio Moscow, the Voice of America, and the BBC, to name a few, played an important ideological role during that confrontation between the East and the West.

Once again, Global Radio broadcasters have moved to the front lines at what is now shaping up as a new Cold War by some of the world’s major super powers. As tensions heat up in the world’s hotspots such as eastern Europe, the Middle East and Eastern Asia, you can follow breaking international events on the radio waves, but you need an accurate and comprehensive guide to broadcast frequencies to hear it.

Teak Publishing is pleased release that important guide – the 10th edition (Summer 2018) International Shortwave Broadcast Guide (ISWBG) electronic book by Amazon bestselling author Gayle Van Horn W4GVH.

If you want to get in on the action, then this Amazon electronic book is your ticket to travel the Global Radio bands. The ISWBG is an exclusive 24-hour station/frequency guide with schedules for selected mediumwave broadcasters and all known longwave/shortwave radio stations transmitting at time of publication. This unique resource is the only radio publication that has by-hour schedules that includes all language services, frequencies and world target areas for over 500 stations. It has a complete listing of DX radio programs and Internet websites addresses for many of the stations listed in the book. There are also listings for standard time and frequency stations, and even a few intriguing spy numbers station listings.

New in this 10th edition of the ISWBG is a feature, Monitoring Brazil on Shortwave Radio. It is more than futebol! by Gayle Van Horn. Soccer teams from around the world will compete this summer in the FIFA World Cup, and Brazil is expected to be a top contender to win the event. This article will aid you in monitoring broadcasters that will be carrying Brazilian soccer team news during this international event.

Other authors with articles in this edition include The Spectrum Monitor’s Fred Waterer, with a feature on summer radio programming, and Hans Johnson with a profile on the state of DRM broadcasting in 2018. There are also two First Look reviews on the new AirSpy HF+ SDR and the W6LVP Magnetic Loop Antenna by Loyd Van Horn W4LVH.

Spectrum Monitor e-zine columnist/feature writer Larry Van Horn N5FPW has a special feature on Who’s Who in the Shortwave Radio Spectrum that will assist the reader in monitoring Global Radio activity outside the broadcast radio spectrum. This article also includes an update to the Teak Publishing HF 1000+ non-broadcast frequency list.
