DX Fanzine No. 48 – August 2017

DX Fanzine, an electronic newsletter which was originally edited in 1999/2000, brings together tips and news as contributed by individual DXers or ascertained from different sources. We are interested in any change about frequencies, times, language-services, transmitters, programme contents, phone and fax-numbers, electronic and postal address, station personnel.
The purpose of DX Fanzine, which doesn’t pretend to be in competition with any other electronic DX newsletter, is to provide timely and topical news and information to shortwave enthusiasts worldwide.
It is available on the web at http://www.dxfanzine.com and updated as soon as loggings, DX news, frequency upadates as well as QSL notes are received from any SWL around the world.
Although the primary platform for delivery of DX FANZINE information remains its web site, it is turned into a pdf file, (where you can see the final version of it with loggings and information, just as they appear online), a couple of days after the end of each month and sent out FREE to anyone who has subscribed. The current as well as the previous editions of DX Fanzine (including those of years 1999/2000!) can be accessed from its home page and are there almost indefinitely.

NB: All times, days and dates are day/month GMT-UTC, unless otherwise stated.

Logs are entered in frequency order. Reception quality abbreviations: P = Poor, F = Fair, G = Good, E = Excellent.

Language Abbreviations: AA=Arabic, CC=Chinese, CT=Catalan, DD=Dutch, EE=English, FF=French, GG=German, HA=Hausa, IT=Italian, JJ=Japanese, KK= Korean, PP=Portoguese, RM=Romanian, RR=Russian, SS=Spanish, VV=Vernacular.

Material from DX Fanzine may be redistributed, posted to any other location, published or used for broadcast, provided it be fully credited to DX Fanzine and the original and intermediate sources.

Logs from Dave Valko in Dunlo, Pennsylvania-USA
Went out to one of the local remote sites to listen earlier today. Here is the report:

31 August 2017: Saw that Ozy R. was on using the web receivers in Bay of Islands New Zealand and Freemans
Reach NSW Australia at home before leaving. They were weak so I wasn’t too hopeful. As the road at this
site is in line with SE Australia, I decided to try setting up there and running the BOG back along the road.
I had no problem setting up and laying out the BOG. Used the MP-10000 charger. (Wire, matching transformer,
10’ RG8X, choke, 40’ RG174, choke, 2’ RG8X, pre-amp, 2’ RG8X, Perseus). This setup worked quite well. I did
take the old 12v gel cells and Velleman with me just in case. Conditions were very noisy. A lot of thunderstorm
crashing static. Right off, I was getting a very weak signal from Ozy R. and bits of audio. Then, the signal level
suddenly increased from 1037-1052, then it suddenly decreased again. Perhaps they went to full 1kw then.
Conditions in general were pretty good. Heard the Malaysians about the best ever. But the noise was just too high.

1048-1052 another unrecognizable Pop song, 1052:35 Kookaburra and “Waltzing Matilda” briefly, then the signal

RADIO FREE ASIA COMMEMORATES 21 YEARS WITH NEW QSL SEPTEMBER 2017
Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces its 21 st anniversary QSL. Bringing free press to closed societies, RFA’s first
broadcast was in Mandarin on September 29, 1996 at 2100 UTC. This redefines our QSL designs incorporating one
graphic into four separate QSL cards and giving listeners options submitting reception reports. You will receive
¼ of the design for one reception report, or get the full sheet when sending us at least four reception reports.
The RFA’s 65th QSL design will be used to confirm all valid RFA reception reports from September–December 2017.

Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North
Korea, Lao, Mandarin (including the Wu dialect), Vietnamese, Tibetan (Uke, Amdo, and Kham), and Uyghur. RFA
strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in its editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides
news and commentary specific to each of its target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack.
RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of its broadcasts comprise news of specific local
interest.

More information about Radio Free Asia, including our current broadcast frequency schedule, is available at
www.rfa.org. RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports. Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they
help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions.

RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener. RFA welcomes all reception
report submissions at http://techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DX’ers, but also from
its general listening audience.

Reception reports are also accepted by email at qsl@rfa.org and by mail to: Reception Reports, Radio Free Asia,
2025 M. Street NW, Suite 300, Washington DC 20036, United States of America.

INTERNATIONAL DX NEWS
AUSTRALIA: The flea-powered Ozy Radio has begun testing on 5045 kHz in the 60-meter band. First noted in
Australia on August 28, the station has been missing for several years from its former 3210 kHz allocation. T
The location has been confirmed as Razorback, New South Wales. The transmitter power is 500 Watts and the type of
antenna is unknown at this time. Observations by myself and other Australian listeners have noted the station
operating between 0600 and past 1300 UTC. The signal into Mount Evelyn, Victoria (at a guess, about 800 km from the
reported transmitter site) is very strong – about 10 dB over S9! This is a much better signal than was ever heard on
the old 3210 outlet. Whatever has been done at the station appears to be working very well! I believe there is a
very good chance that Ozy Radio will be heard internationally! The current programming consists of test transmission
announcements, relays of the Australian Independent News service, and continuous antique pop music from the 50s and
60s. Cheekily, the station is also using the Radio Australia interval signal, while the Radio Australia kookaburra
also fires off every now and again throughout the broadcasts. I’m not sure how the ABC feels about that!!
Reception reports are welcome to the following E-mail address: dxer1234@gmail.com (Rob Wagner VK3BVW via Mount
Evelyn DX Report. Web address: http://medxr.blogspot.it/ NB: This news information has been slightly edited by
editor of DX Fanzine).

GERMANY/ITALY: IBC Italian Broadcasting Corporation announces a new QSL policy. Its website says: "We confirm
all correct reception reports with our eQSL. We are sorry, but due to high cost of stamps, if you need our paper
QSL (sent with a IBC sticker), a donation is required". Among future plans, there is the possibility to extend
their Saturday broadcast via Rohrbach Waal, on 6070 kHz at the end of October. If so, the new slot time will be
as follows: 1300-1500 UTC (Currently 1300-1400). By the way, IBC has decided that this Saturday transmission
via Rohrbach Waal, will, however, start at 1300 even during B-17 broadcast schedule period. (IBC - Italian
Broadcasting Corporation)

ITALY: After about two months of absence, Marconi Radio International (MRI) will be back on the air on,
Sunday, 3 September 2017, with its original, very old and just refurbished transmitter as follows: 07.30-11.30 UTC
on 11390 kHz AM with only 20 watts. Reception reports with audio clips (mp3-file) are welcome and confirmed by QSL
verification. Some lucky listeners will ALSO receive our printed QSL card, so don't forget to include your postal
address. E-mail: marconiradiointernational (at) gmail.com As usual, we need your help! If you are a DX blogger, or
use social networks, please post an announcement on your own blog and/or Facebook or send out a tweet. You can also
forward this message to a friend. Last but not least: We kindly ask our listeners, who are still waiting for a QSL
verification, to remain patient. All pending reception reports will be acknowledged by the end of September. We
hope to hear from a lot of shortwave listeners about our transmissions. (Press release from MRI- Marconi Radio
International).

TAJIKISTAN(?): After a number of observations during the month of August, it is confirmed that Adventist
World Radio, presumed still from Dushanbè-Yangiyul, has replaced, from 1300 to 1330 on 15430 kHz its programme in
Dzongkha language with one in Nepalese. This change was noted after listening to their English announcement ahead
of the broadcast. In addition, the following E-mail address was given on the air by a Nepalese speaker:
nepal@awr.org (Antonello Napolitano, Editor of DX Fanzine).

EDXC 2017 IN TAMPERE FINLAND - A SHORT REPORT

by Christian Ghibaudo

This year the annual conference of the EDXC was held (August 18-20) in Tampere, a nice city between two lakes in
central Finland. This place was chosen because the local Tampere DX Club celebrated 50 years, and it was also the
occasion to celebrate the 50 years of the EDXC and the 100 years of Finland!

Tampere is also the birth place of the Finnish Radio Broadcasting (Tampere Radio) in 1923. The conference was
held at the Varala Sports Institute just some minutes outside the city centre.

I already joined Helsinki the day before, and on Friday morning, I took the train for Tampere. Around two hours
later, I meet my friend Dario Monferini already in Tampere since the day before. Other old friends arrived, and
at 16.00, there was the Opening of the meeting and the flag ceremony outside the entrance of Varala. At 16.15
Anker Petersen, a famous Danish DXer, explained to us how the EDXC was born, some 50 years ago. From 17.00 it was
already lunch time and from 18.00 Risto Vähäkainu gave us a brief history of the EDXC. Both conferences were
very interesting for the memory of past EDXC Conferences.

From 19.00 Jim Solatie, talked about DX traveling around the world, with a very funny small competition about DX,
radio history and geography!

At 21.00 The Welcome Reception with Sauna (!), snacks and drinks were held on the shores of the lake. A very
friendly and positive moment to chat with friends.

After the breakfast on the second day (Saturday), from 09.30 Ismo Kauppi and Tapio Kalmi talk about AM listening,
then Jon Hudson presented us the latest news about SDR receivers.

Just before the lunch, Kirsti Kauristie of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) discusses details of the
ionosphere. From 13.00, we had a Sightseeing by bus, in this tour, we can see main places of Tampere and also the
transmitter site with the antenna of Pispalan Radio a local (AM, FM) station in Tampere.

From 16.00 conference sessions started again. Pasi Komsi Director of Pispalan Radio talked about the story of this
unique station. Pispalan Radio is on MW on 729 kHz, but for the moment the power is under 5 watts.

16.30 to 18.30 a wonderful presentation about FM DXing, by Jukka Kotovirta, with two FM related quizzes, in
particular, the one «Video Kill the Radio Star» hosted by Jopi Nyman and Jussi Suokas.

19.00-23.00 It was the EDXC Banquet, with before the Jubilee Dinner, a ceremony for the FDXA awards. At the end
of the dinner, Jukka and Jarmo presented a funny DX Auction, where items donated were sold by auctions. Items such
as electronic materials, old receivers, stickers, books and also Monaco euro coins!

And it’s already the last day of the conference on Sunday. From 09.30 Kari Kivekäs and Jan-Mikael Nurmela talked
about EDXC matters and the propositions for next year conference.

At 10.30 Mika Mäkeläinen have a presentation about «How to go a QSL from a Chinese station», with a connexion
with Miss Liu Hengyi live from China!

After the lunch, from 12.30 Dan Goldfarb from the UK hold a presentation about MW masts and transmitters around the
world. Now his huge project is on his website www.mwmasts.com

Then Toshi Ohtake presented «Radio Listening in Japan, past, present and future.

At 13.45-14.00 it was the Flag ceremony and the final words of the meeting. See you next year!

correlati all’FM. Particolarmente divertente quello denominato «Video killed the Radio Star» presentato da Jopi
Nyman e Jussi Suokas.

web: www.mwmasts.com

Per tutti l’arrivederci è all’anno prossimo.
